Needing principles may be different and focus of treatment. Chinese medicine acupuncture is focused on the whole body as a system and how to balance that system as a whole. There is also a large difference in education and training.

Acupuncture works by utilizing the energy you have in reserve in your body to promote healing; and the acupuncturist looks to what energy can be added from your environment to balance your body and mind; which increases your health and healing back to a homeostatic level.
(Eg. If a person wants to go for a hike but does not have the energy (qi) what must they do to train their body to be able to do this? Eg. If a plant is not growing properly, we always look to what the plant is missing or receiving too much of.) This method of assessment is how the acupuncturist learns what your body is saying and prescribes acupuncture techniques and lifestyle changes which aim to make you feel well again. Assessment and your health history is probably the most important way to determine the most effective treatment and home-care plan.
Acupuncture treatments may use ultra-thin needles to stimulate tissues, nerves, energy, and chemical transmitters in the body which help to speed the healing process or redirect imbalances of energy causing disease in the body. The treatment sends signals that will trigger the brain and body to increase the body’s healing mechanisms. (It’s like pressing a specific button on remote controller and then actions happen) So, depending on the needle placement positions and combinations of needles and lifestyle choices enacted the healing mechanisms of the body then may choose to reduce inflammation, relax tight muscles, and increase circulation and so on. This allows acupuncture to be very successful at treating many health concerns.

How we breathe, what we eat, where we life, stress or the amount of sunlight and joy our lives have matter to a full recovery.
Acute Conditions: injuries or something recent are the easiest to treat and generally recover quickly.
eg. food poisoning must be acupunctured every 4 hours as symptoms reappear until the body finished passing the poisons...
eg. Injuries are very effectively treated every other day to a few times a week depending on the issue and severity.
eg. Period pain is best caught before it escalates in severity. But it also requires lifestyle and diet changes and possible manual hands on
therapy's
eg. Migraines, Period pain and many symptoms of other types of conditions in an acute flair up are often reduced 60 to 100 percent in a single needling treatment. But finding the root cause of any condition like chronic migraines requires a full health history, lifestyle changes, possible environmental changes, and possible manual hands-on therapy. The deeper and longer you have had a problem the more in depth the treatment protocol and duration it takes to heal itself.
Chronic conditions or lifelong afflictions take a lot more assessment, treatments, patience, and lifestyle changes.
The average effective treatment cycle is a round of 12 acupuncture sessions before reassessing. Treatments are done every few days, 2 times a week minimum to make strides in reversing the ill effects of your chronic affliction.
